The Situation
A retired teacher brought in her 5-year-old HP laptop. She used it daily for emails, Word documents, and video calls with her grandkids — but it had become so slow she'd given up on it. Boot time was over 8 minutes. Opening Chrome took another 2.
She was ready to spend $1,200+ on a new laptop. We suggested a different approach first.
What We Found
The laptop's original spinning hard drive was the bottleneck. At 5 years old with constant daily use, the HDD was performing well below spec — read speeds were under 80MB/s. The RAM was also maxed at 4GB, which Windows 11 chews through just sitting at idle.
The processor and display were both fine. The chassis was clean. This machine had years of life left in it — it just needed better storage and more memory.
What We Did
- Cloned the existing HDD to a new 500GB Samsung 870 EVO SSD — no data loss, no reinstall needed
- Opened the laptop and swapped in the SSD
- Added an 8GB RAM stick alongside the existing 4GB (12GB total)
- Ran Windows disk cleanup and startup optimisation
- Tested boot time, application launch times, and browser performance
- Handed it back with a guide on keeping it running fast
The Result
Boot time dropped from over 8 minutes to 28 seconds. Chrome opened instantly. Word loaded in under 2 seconds. The customer spent $180 in parts (plus our labour) instead of $1,200+ on a new machine — and got a faster result.
